Reward and Invigorate Your Staff for the New Year: Why Work Retreats “Work”

When you work an 8-5, there’s a lot of time spent in the office with your head down. Rarely do you have time to chat with coworkers and reminisce about your weekend or discuss what fun things you and your family have coming up. There’s simply no time for this in many workplaces, and it’s especially true for those who work in the Tax/Accounting Industry. In December you’re planning Year-End strategies, and January-April, you’re hitting the ground running with tax season. This is why it’s important to take time out of the office as a group.

Work retreats are a fun way to relax and learn more about your work team. Bonding, outside of work, is an essential step in making sure that everyone is able to work as a team. It also gives everyone a chance to discuss work or special projects in a more relaxed environment. Recently, Summersgill CPA went to Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, FL to celebrate the opening of their new office in the Business Plaza. Having a smaller office, they were all able to bring their spouses; which was an even better way to help the group really connect.

Once everyone arrived on Friday, Shannon (firm owner) and Bobby (Shannon’s husband) greeted the couples and kicked off the weekend of fun! (It wouldn’t be a REAL work retreat if no one made an itinerary…) First it was lunch at The Raw Bar, then a sunset cruise out on the ocean, a few apéritifs & hors d'oeuvres, and a dinner that was more than delicious at Gianni Ristorante. There were plenty of smiles to go around! They finished the night playing pool and shuffleboard, and maybe even a doing a little disco dancing.

Saturday started with a yummy breakfast at Reef Treats, followed by a bit of shopping, and a trip to the pool and beach area where teams formed to play a very serious, best 2-out-of-3 cornhole championship. The competition left everyone famished, and the staff hopped on the boat to their lunch destination—Alabama Jack’s. Bobby and Shannon were quick to declare their undying love for the conch fritters, and everyone was in agreement. Lunch was followed by paddle-boarding before a lovely dinner at The Islander.

The last day was certainly a treat, as the gang got to go offshore fishing! Not many “keepers” were caught, but the fish were pretty and some even got kissed! After a few hours on the water, they headed back to shore for their last meal together at the Buzzard’s Roost—which may or may not have been in Miami. This group isn’t the best with directions… After more conch fritters and the best margaritas they’ve had, a quick boat ride brought them back to the Club to pack up. Soon, goodbyes were said, and they were on their way!

This trip will be something the staff at Summersgill CPA will talk about for months, and it created something very special—a bond. They returned having a better connection with one another. It was such a special weekend, and the perfect precursor to tax season! Now the crew is back to business in the office, with a little less stress weighing them down.
